History of Fake Tanning

The Legend of Sunless Tanning

From Porcelain Skin to Sun-Kissed Glow
Tanning products have come a very long way since they first appeared on the beauty scene. Up until the 1920s, a porcelain complexion was considered the height of sophistication. Pale, creamy skin paired with dark hair (and perhaps a chrome cigarette holder for added drama) was the ultimate beauty standard.

Coco Chanel and the Sun-Kissed Revolution

As legend has it, Coco Chanel accidentally changed beauty trends forever. While sailing in Cannes in the mid-1920s, she soaked up a little too much sunshine. When she reappeared, bronzed and glowing, the fashion world went wild. Suddenly, a tan was the new must-have accessory.

Homemade Fake Tan Hacks

In the 1940s and 50s, women got creative, even using tea bags to stain their skin for a subtle glow. By the 1960s, with bikinis becoming mainstream, sunbathing for hours on end became popular. Baby oil and silver UV reflectors were often used to speed up tanning; unfortunately, sunburn and peeling were a common side effect.
The Rise (and Risks) of Sunbeds
The late 1970s saw the first UV sunbeds hit the market, with their popularity booming in the 80s. By the 90s, however, the dangers became impossible to ignore. Direct links to skin cancer shifted the conversation, and safer alternatives were in demand.

Self-Tan Through the Decades

The 90s and early 2000s brought a wave of new self-tan products. While many worked well, others… not so much. We all remember the dreaded “Oompa Loompa” orange tones and streaky disasters. Thankfully, those days are behind us. Today’s tanning products, with the right prep and aftercare, deliver natural, flawless results
