Can men get a spray tan?
Yes, and plenty do. We tan men regularly for weddings, holidays, competitions and photoshoots. The price is the same, the process is the same, and the main differences are shade choice and body hair, both of which we work around without any fuss.
We will be honest, this is still the question people ask most quietly, usually by message rather than out loud.
So, plainly: yes. Men get spray tans. Grooms, groomsmen, blokes going on holiday, lads before a big night, bodybuilders before a competition, and men getting professional photographs done. It is genuinely unremarkable and has been for years.
What is different
Shade. Men usually want less than they think. The aim is almost always “looks like he has been away for a week”, not “looks tanned”. We will normally steer you a shade lighter than the equivalent for a woman, and it looks better for it.
Body hair. Not a problem and not something to be self-conscious about. Chest, arms, legs and backs all tan fine. The product goes onto the skin underneath and it works. If you shave or trim, do it at least a day before rather than the same day.
Definition. If you want muscle definition brought out, say so. It is a different technique, using contouring through the shadows rather than an even coat. Common before competitions and photoshoots and we are happy to do it. For everyday, most men want the even version.
Face. Men’s faces tan slightly differently, particularly around beards and stubble. We will go lighter there and blend into the neck carefully, because a hard line at the jaw is the classic giveaway.
What is exactly the same
The price. £20 to £26 depending on the product, same as everyone.
The prep. Exfoliate the day before, no moisturiser on the day, no deodorant or aftershave when we arrive.
The aftercare. Moisturise daily after your first shower, keep showers short and lukewarm, and pat dry rather than rub.
And the discretion. We come to your house, nobody sees you walking into a salon, and we do not discuss our clients. For a lot of the men who book us, that is the actual reason they book us.
Weddings
This is where most of our male bookings come from.
Grooms usually want very little, and that is the right instinct. Enough to not look washed out next to the bride in the photos, no more. Groomsmen sometimes want a bit more, particularly if there is a suit involved that they have been in the gym for.
Two days before works the same as it does for anyone. Do it the morning of and you will regret it.
If the whole party is getting done, we do it in one visit at one house. That is usually simpler than five separate appointments and a good deal more fun. More on the bridal page.
The first-timer bit
If you are nervous, that is completely normal and you are in good company. It takes about twenty minutes, you wear what you want, and nobody is judging anything. We have done this thousands of times.
Message us and ask whatever you want to ask first. Nothing is a daft question and we would far rather talk it through than have you guess.
Frequently asked questions
Can men get spray tans?
Yes, and plenty do. Weddings, holidays, competitions and photoshoots are the common reasons. Same price and same process as anyone else.
Does body hair affect a spray tan?
No. The product reaches the skin underneath and tans normally. If you shave or trim, do it at least a day before rather than on the day.
How much is a spray tan for men?
Exactly the same as for anyone, £20 to £26 depending on which product you choose.
Can a spray tan make muscle definition look better?
Yes, with a contouring technique rather than an even coat. It is common before competitions and photoshoots. Just tell us that is what you are after.
What shade should a man get?
Usually lighter than people expect. The aim is looking like you have had a week away, not looking tanned. We will normally recommend a shade down from the equivalent for a woman.
