Ladies Day At Ayr: What It’s Really Like

There’s a specific kind of buzz that hits Ayrshire in the run-up to Ladies Day at Ayr Racecourse. You’ll clock it in the salon chat, in the group chats, in the sudden appearance of hat boxes in car boots outside the school run. I’ve prepped hundreds of women for their own Ladies Day over the years, and I’ve stood in the enclosure in my own glad rags more than once too, so here’s the honest version of what it’s actually like, not the polished brochure copy.

It’s not the day. It’s the six weeks before it.

Ask me what my favourite part of Ladies Day actually is, and it’s not the races, or even the day itself.

That’s the bit nobody puts on the official event page, and it’s the truest thing I can tell you about a day like this. The dress, the tan, the hat, the countdown in the group chat, none of that is throat-clearing before the real event. For most women, that is the event.

The outfit that took months, not an afternoon

Forget the idea that a Ladies Day look comes together in one lucky Saturday of shopping. My own outfit was a proper build, a mix of Shein, vintage finds and high street, plus one accessory that nearly didn’t happen at all.

Months, for a bag. If that sounds excessive, it isn’t, it’s exactly the level of detail that separates “I wore a nice dress” from an actual Ladies Day look, and it’s the same care I bring to matching a tan shade to an outfit rather than just doing “a tan.”

My husband got roped into the colour scheme too, in blue and yellow to play what I call my “handsome accessory,” changing his tie three times the night before to get it right. Turns out the pressure doesn’t stop at the door of the ladies’ loo.

The tan: Bondi Sands Dark, and a lot of exfoliating first

On product, I didn’t dress it up. For my own Ladies Day glow it was Bondi Sands in the darkest shade, with serious exfoliation in the days beforehand to make sure it went on even and lasted the distance, race day, into the evening, into whatever the night turned into.

It’s the same principle I work to for every client heading to a big race day: the prep matters as much as the product, and the shade gets chosen for the dress and the skin, not picked off a shelf at random. It’s not the polished, filtered version of a race day, it’s the real one. Best dressed in the enclosure at 2pm, chips in hand by midnight.

Getting your own Ladies Day right

Off the back of my own experience and years of prepping other women for it, a few things hold up:

Start earlier than feels necessary, the outfit, the accessories, and yes, the bag, can take longer to land than you’d think. Book the tan a day or two before, not the morning of, so it has time to settle and deepen properly, and exfoliate properly in the run-up rather than the night before. Plan an outfit you can actually dance in by 9pm, not just stand elegantly in at 1pm. And don’t over-plan the ending, some of the best parts of a Ladies Day are the ones nobody puts in the itinerary.
